Weekly plants just keep making the trout action better and better at Corona Lake. Over the past week, five-fish limits were common for anglers fishing a wide variety of floating dough baits with chartreuse the hot color. Small trout jigs and trout plastics are also hot baits.
Top rainbow was an eight-pounder caught by Arturo Velazquez, Anaheim, while fishing from a float tube with a jig. Steve Benson and Chloe Ronavillo, both Rowland Heights, landed 15 trout for 27 pounds with a 4 3/4-pounder their best fish. All were caught on corn Power Bait near the boat ramp. Stephen and Marci Shiotsugu, both Redondo Beach, landed 15 trout for 16 1/2 pounds on peach-colored floating bait at the dam. Wes Wright, Fullerton, landed five trout for 14 pounds with his top rainbow a four pounder. Most five-fish trout limits are averaging 10 to 12 pounds.
With the trout bite so good, few anglers are targeting the catfish, but fall is traditionally the best time of the year to land big cats. Oliver Valdez, Corona, was using a nightcrawlers when he hooked and landed a 31-pound cat this week from a boat. Manny Villalpando, Riverside, had six cats for 13 1/2 ponds on shrimp from shore. His top cat was a three-pounder. While Corona Lake is getting hefty trout plants each week, the big season "opener" has been set for Friday, Nov. 18, when the lake will receive some of the biggest trout and largest loads of fish ever delivered to the lake. Details aren't final, but angler's can check The Lakes web site at www.fishinglakes.com to get the latest updates.
