The trout season started with a bang at Corona Lake with limits of rainbows to three pounds or a little better pretty common for anglers fishing near the dam from shore, float tube, or boat this past week. Anglers not quite ready for trout season because of the warm weather did just as well on the catfish.
The best trout action has been on small trout jigs, trout plastics, and floating dough baits, and the cooler, deeper water at the dam has been the best spot for the trout action. The cats have also been in deeper water with boat anglers getting the most fish, waiting the cats out fishing mackerel chunks or nightcrawlers doused with scent. One of the top stringers reported this past week was a 15-fish, 28 1/2-pound catch of Sierra Bows made by Robert Vega, Orange, fishing a garlic dough bait at the dam. Matthew Olney, Montebello, and Greg Schowen, Fontana, had 10 rainbows for 22-pounds on chartreuse floating bait fishing from a boat near the dam. Better Kerr, Yucca Valley, landed 10 rainbows for 18 pounds, while Vaughn Densley, Huntington Beach, had 10 trout for 17 3/4 pounds. Richard and Sonni Rivera, Murrieta, landed 15 trout for 24 pounds on rainbow dough bait at the dam, while Louie and Mike Castianeda, Baldwin Park, had 10 trout for 16 1/2 pounds. One of the best five-fish stringers was posted by Mike Marquez, Beaumont. He landed a 3 1/2-pounder to top off his five-fish 13 1/2-pound catch, all on jigs from a float tube. Adam Paulson, Redlands, had five fish for 12 pounds, also on jigs from a float tube near the dam. Mark Thomsom, Riverside, landed five for 11 1/2 pounds while Alex Saucedo, Menifee, had five for 11 pounds. The best catfish reported was an 8 ?-pounder caught by Tony Hui, West Covina, fishing mackerel from a boat. Bill Cooper, Dave Porter, and Bob Schempp, all Los Angeles, had 15 channel cats for 38 pounds with a seven-pounder their best fish. The three anglers were fishing with mackerel from a boat. Tom Pearcy, La Verne, landed five cats for 13 pounds.
The trout plants are each week now, and this week will be the first plant of the season of the popular Nebraska Tailwalkers.
