Corona Lake's catfish action is swinging into high gear, and there will be 24-hour fishing this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and it looks like the weather will finally be cooperating with some warm days and pleasant evenings.
There were two catfish plants this past week along with some trophy fish at Corona Lake, and the bite has been good, even though most of the trophies remained elusive. Catfish will be planted again this week, including more trophy fish for the holiday.
The biggest fish of the week was a 17-pound sturgeon landed by Carlos Gomez, Riverside, fishing a nightcrawlers from shore near the dam on Saturday.
The best catfish stringer was posted by James Marshall, Temecula. He was fishing on a 24-hour pass Saturday night and ended up landing 14 Silver King catfish for a total stringer of 29 pounds. Marshall was fishing from a boat with fresh shrimp to make the catch.
Manny Villalpanda, Riverside, had nine cats from shore for a total of 16 pounds, and he was also fishing with shrimp. Mike Ortiz, Corona, landed five cats on mackerel for a 13-pound total weight fishing at the dam. Dennis Williams, San Bernardino, landed three cats and two trout for a nine-pound total weight fishing nightcrawlers from a boat.
Anglers are reminded that the limit on trout has been lifted so anglers can take home as many rainbows as possible before the water becomes too warm for the rainbows. There has also been a pretty fair bite on tilapia, which are being planted each week, too, and some bluegill, bass, and crappie were reported this past week.
The best action for the cats has been for boat or shore anglers who are risking losing a few rigs and fishing up in the flooded brush and trees with nightcrawlers, JD's Catfish Bait, or the meal worm-marshmallow or shrimp-marshmallow combo bait continues to be best.
