Shrimp and the marshmallow-meal worm (M&M) combination have been the top baits in the very good catfish bite at Santa Ana River Lakes after double plants last week to start the season. There will also be plants this week, including another batch of trophy Silver King catfish, for Memorial Day weekend.

There is also now 24-hour fishing every Friday and Saturday night each week, and because of the Monday holiday, there will also be 24-hour fishing this Sunday. The "family special" applies to all 24-hour passes, when mom and dad and up to three kids under 12 can all fish on the same permit and help fill up the 15-fish, 24-hour permit limit.

Tilapia are also being planted each week, and the bite on these tasty panfish has been pretty good on nightcrawlers pieces. A few sturgeon are also caught each week, but this bite will slow as the water warms.

Anglers are reminded that trout are still showing in pretty fair numbers and the staff is encouraging everyone to keep all the trout they catch so the fish aren't wasted as the water slowly becomes too warm for the rainbows to survive. There is no limit on the trout right now.
