A big plant of Lightning Trout last week and another load of trophy Mt. Lassen Trout farms rainbows has keep the action hot at Santa Ana River Lakes this past week. The two big fish reported at the tackle shop included a 20-pound, 12-ounce rainbow landed by Shon Roberts of Riverside fishing . The fish was nearly matched with an 18-pound, four-ounce super rainbow caught by Tyler Hoem of Carlsbad fishing with salmon egg-colored and flavored dough bait, also near the boat dock. Izzy Huang, Cerritos, caught a 13 1/2-pound rainbow to top off his five-fish limit caught from Chris' Pond on small trout plastic worms, and Larry Rosales, Santa Ana, caught a 10 3/4-pounder on chartreuse floating dough bait. Paulo Suen, Fulleton, caught a 9  ?-pound rainbow to top off his stringer, all caught on plastic trout worms in Chris' Pond, and Allen Kennedy, Tustin, had a 9-pound, two-ounce rainbow on garlic dough bait near the boat dock. There were also a steady stream of five-fish limits over the past week and many had a nice mix of the golden-hued Lightning Trout and the three types of rainbows that have been planted this season. The five-fish stringers have run from 10 to 16 pounds, and the best action has been on chartreuse or orange floating dough baits with garlic scent built in or added, small trout jigs, or inflated nightcrawlers, also doused with garlic. While fish are showing around much of the lakes' complex, Levitz' Corner, near the boat dock, and "the road" area have been the hottest spots. Raymon Escobar and Anthony Cruz, both Buena Park, teamed up to land 10 rainbows for a total of 26 pounds, including a five-pounder as the top fish, all on chartreuse floating boat near the docks. The Lightning Trout are golden colored with a rich crimson stripe along their sides and gill plate, and they have bright, pink meat that makes them look like a salmon filet. They are SARL anglers' favorite trout to see, catch, and eat, and last week's stock was the first plant of them this season. SARL and its sister water Corona Lake will have a large booth at this year's Fred Hall Show in Long Beach March 9-13. There will be free discount coupons given away from both lakes at this event for those who stop by the booth. There will also be a special announcement at this event. Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors pay only $20. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. There are 24-hour passes available the weekend nearest the full moon during trout season, with the next overnight fishing is set for March 18-19. These passes cost $60 and anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit. Camping at SARL is also free with a 24-hour pass.
