Rainbows at 7 1/4-pounds were caught by Larry Guzman, Whittier, and David Lieberman, Rancho Santa Margarita, and both were fishing floating baits. One of the top five-fish catches was a 16-pound, two-ounce stringer landed by Robert Vega, Orange, and his best trout was a 4-10 rainbow. All were caught on chartreuse floating bait. A 15 1/2-pound stringer was posted by George Tebelekian, Anaheim, fishing nightcrawlers on the west shoreline, and his best trout was a 4-2. Armando Gonzalez, Anaheim, had five rainbows for 14 1/2 pounds and his best was a 3 3/4-pounder, also on nightcrawlers. Jose Kon, Las Cruces, N.M., and Michael Kon, Temple City, had seven rainbows for 21 1/2 pounds with a 4-3 the top trout. Mike Brown, Armando Marquez, and Joshua Johnson, all Covina, landed seven rainbows for a 20 1/2-pound stringer, and the big trout was a 4-4.

Plants of Mt. Lassen Sierra Bows, Nebraska Tailwakers, or Jess Ranch rainbows and steelhead are planted every week, and many weeks there are double or triple plants. Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors pay only $20. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. There are 24-hour passes available the weekend nearest the full moon during trout season, with the next overnight fish Feb. 18-19. These passes cost $60 and anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit. Camping at SARL is also free with a 24-hour pass.
