Castaic Lake dropped to 77 percent of capacity, and water temperatures fell into the upper fifties. High winds hampered fishing and launching, but bass, striper, and other species are still biting. Large and smallmouth took finesse baits 15 to 50 feet of water with drop shot, C-rigs, and Ned rigs working for bites. Brown, dark green and Aaron’s Magic were reliable color choices. Main lake points have been the best place to look for bites. Vertical spooning techniques were a good option for the deeper fish. Striped bass took trolled flies in white and chartreuse at depths of 25 to 50 feet. Umbrella rigs have worked for bites as well. Bait anglers soaked cut sardines at the inlet buoy line and along the dam for a few line-sides, and catfish anglers reported fair fishing while using cut baits and dip baits. Anglers are anxiously awaiting the first trout plant of the season. With Pyramid Lake receiving 5000 pounds of trout on Tuesday Castaic should see some rainbows soon.
