Castaic held at 34 percent of capacity, and water temperatures fell into the low sixties. Water clarity suffered due to high winds and rain, but the bite was solid. Bass anglers found fish in deeper water last week while using finesse baits. Drop shot, Carolina rigs, and shaky heads in Green Pumpkin, purple, and brown all worked for bites. Jigs and deep diving crankbaits also fooled large and smallmouth on ledges, bluffs, and main lake points. Striper schools scattered throughout the water column, and anglers have been using a variety of techniques to fool them. Some of the best techniques included large trout imitations such as Huddleston’s, glides baits, and magnum topwater lures. Striper also fell for trolled umbrella rigs and flies with the bite being better in the cleaner water of the ski arm. Bait anglers reported a slower bite at the forebay buoy line. Last week the lake received the second trout plant of the season, and anglers did very well near the marina. The trout took minijigs, dough baits, and nightcrawlers. Anglers also hooked plenty of the 12” to 16” rainbows on Kastmasters.
