BASS
Morning topwater action in the marina cove and south shore points is wide open. Swimbaits, stickbaits, and poppers accounted for some fat fish. When the weather gets hot the west side of the lake is a great area to focus your Carolina and Texas rigs. Bass are 20-40 feet around the saddle dam, the inlet tower, west dam, and restroom 3. Flukes, brush hogs, 11" worms, fat Ikas, and drop shot finesse worms are just a sample of techniques that lure the large mouth. Shore fishing is slow in comparison to the boaters who are reporting easy 20 fish days. The best bass spots on shore are the marina cove and corner of the east dam. Dexter Botanga of Glendale caught his two biggest bass at 4 pounds fishing with topwater lures in the marina cove. Jim Mehan of Winchester caught his two biggest bass at 5 and 7 pounds fishing with a Rapala on the dams. Byro Orona of San Jacinto released over 25 fish his biggest five weighed a total of 17.71 pounds. Byron was trolling swimbaits.
TROUT
No one knows the whereabouts of DVL trout. The typical summer holdover bite has yet to materialize. The few trout that were caught this summer came from the west side of the lake. Usually drifting nightcrawlers or trolling lures along the west dam is the way to go.
STRIPER
There was little striper action this week. Most catches were near Rawson cove and the west dam. Swimbaits, underspins, and scroungers are some of the best baits.
CATFISH
DVL has a sound catfish bite. Several anglers reported catches over 5 lbs. The cats loved the crawlers this week, but mackerel and anchovies have been the most consistent baits. The most reported areas have been the saddle dam, Rawson cove, near the quarry, and along the west dam. Scott Shafor and Robert Campos of Hemet caught three cats at 6.8, 6.18, and 4.4 pounds fishing with nightcrawlers on the west dam. Sheldon Johnson of Hemet caught an 8.42 pound cat fishing with nightcrawlers on the west dam.
PANFISH
If you can't catch the bass or cats you can always fish bluegill for a thrill. The dams are typically loaded with the feisty fish. Live worms or mini jigs will usually do the trick. Amy Monroe of Los Angeles caught her first fish, a 1.6oz bluegill.
