Fires, Santa Ana winds, and unseasonably hot weather have slowed the trout action one bite at Santa Ana River Lakes this past week. In fact, thanks to plants of big rainbows from Mt. Lassen Trout Farms, the action is very good.
The top rainbow reported was a 9 3/4-pounder caught by Mike Johnston, Yorba Linda, to top off his four-fish 17 3/4-pound stringer caught on lemon lime-colored Nitro Bait near the dock. Raul Rodriguez, Whittier, have a five-fish limit that weighed in at 15 3/4 pounds, including one at 6 1/2 pounds, while fishing corn-flavored Nitro Bait at Levitz' Coroner. But the week's best stringer was landed by Daniel Fernandez, Carson, who caught five trout that weighed in at 21-8. His big fish was a 5-8, and all were landed on jigs at the Bubble Hole.
Lots of other limits were reported and many had trout on those five-fish stringers that included at least one fish topping four pounds. Floating baits, inflated nightcrawlers, and small jigs have all been very production, especially when a flavored scent is added to any of these baits.
Santa Ana River Lakes is planted with trout every Wednesday, and the holiday season means there will be plants of huge rainbows and some opportunities to win some Christmas cash. The first plant of huge, 20-plus pound Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows will go in on Wednesday, Nov. 26. SARL will be close on 2 p.m. this date, before the trout are stocked, and then the lake will also be closed for Thanksgiving day. The Lakes will reopen on Friday, Nov. 28, giving anglers their first opportunity this season to catch these huge 20 to 30-pound fish.
Then coming in December, there will be two events to mark on the calendar: First, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, SARL will be stocked with the largest Nebraska Tailwalkers the Chaulk Mound Trout Farm has to offer. This will be followed with a special $20 buy-in trout derby on Saturday, Dec. 20. The entry fee is in addition to the usual lake entrance, but all derby entry money will be awarded to the anglers catching the five biggest trout caught that day. The biggest fish will win half the derby money, the second biggest will get 20 percent, the third biggest 15 percent, the fourth biggest will win 10 percent, and the fifth largest trout will get five percent.
Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes are $22. Seniors only pay $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The once-monthly 24-hour passes remain just $60 with the next 24-hour fishing set for Dec. 12-13. These passes have a 15-fish limit.
