The new "Tailwalker" rainbows from Nebraska have proved a huge hit with anglers at Santa Ana River Lakes over the past week with limits of fish up to 4 1/2 pounds the rule the first two or three days after the plant.
"The Nebraska Tailwalkers have beautiful color, full fins, and pink meat," said Holly Jelderda at the Santa Ana River Lakes tackle shop. "There have been lots of happy anglers this week."
Top Tailwalkers reported were a trio of 4 1/2 pounders. Bob Torez, Bellflower, and Samuel Todd, Irvine, each topped off their five-fish limits with 4 1/2 pound rainbows. Torez' limit weighed in at 14 3/4 pounds and he was using white Nitro eggs, while Todd's fish totaled 15 1/2 pounds and he was fishing with nightcrawlers doused with Nitro Gravy. Sandra Suzane, Fullerton, had the other 4 1/2-pounder fishing Nitro Bait in lemon-lime color.
The catfish bite continues good, if not neglected. James Jordan, Inglewood, landed three cats to 2 1/2 pounds fishing mackerel off the north shore.
Trout are now being planted each week, and the plants will alternate between the Nebraska Tailwalkers and the famous Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows. Some of those Mt. Lassen plants will again have the giant rainbows over 20 pounds that has made Mt. Lassen and Santa Ana River Lakes famous.
Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass and the popular 24-hour passes will only be available one weekend each month.
