Corona Lake trout bite sizzles, but huge catfish steal show this week

Corona Lake's trout action has been good to excellent over the past week, and the lake will be getting its first plant of huge Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows this week. These are fish that can and will top the 20-pound mark.

But even with all the excitement surrounding the trout action, it was several catches of big, trophy catfish that had anglers wowed over the past week.

Corona regular Fred Brouthon of Los Angeles caught catfish at 16, 19, 25 and 28 pounds this past Saturday fishing shrimp from a boat. Last Wednesday, he had cats at 16 and 18 pounds, also on shrimp. Brouthon released all of the trophy cats back into Corona Lake.

There is always a good late fall bite on the catfish at Corona. In fact, this is often when the biggest cats of the year are landed. While few anglers are fishing for the catfish, the best action has been on shrimp, the nightcrawler-marshmallow combo, and other cut baits.

The top rainbow trout this past week was a 7 1/2-pounder landed by Joe Fernandez and Darrel Black, both of Fontana, who had 12 fish that weighed in at 32 pounds. Sam and Patrick Wetzler, both Quail Valley, had six rainbows that weighed 19 1/2 pounds, including a seven pounder. There were also four trout at five pounds landed. David Tyler, Lake Elsinore, had one of the five-pounders to top off his 17 1/4-pound five-fish stringer. Traves Broadbent, Menifee, and Joe Gargarda, Corona, each had 17-pound, five-fish stringers with five-pounder as their best fish. Walter Valencia, Corona, and Rene Dominic, Alta Loma, caught four trout that weighed 13 pounds total, with a five-pounder as their top fish.

The trout are best on floating baits, inflated nightcrawlers, and small trout jigs and plastics, and all are improved by adding scent.

Corona Lake is planted with trout every Wednesday, and the holiday season means there will be plants of huge rainbows and some opportunities to win some Christmas cash. The first plant of huge, 20-plus pound Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows went in after the lake closed early at 2 p.m. on Wednesday this week. The lake remained closed Thanksgiving day and will reopen this Friday. This will be the first time this season anglers will have a chance to catch these huge rainbows.

Coming in December, there will be two events to mark on the calendar: First, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, Corona Lake will be stocked with the largest Nebraska Tailwalkers the Chaulk Mound Trout Farm has to offer. This will be followed with a special $20 buy-in trout derby on Sunday, Dec. 21. The entry fee is in addition to the usual lake entrance, but all derby entry money will be awarded to the anglers catching the five biggest trout caught that day. The biggest fish will win half the derby money, the second biggest will get 20 percent, the third biggest 15 percent, the fourth biggest will win 10 percent, and the fifth largest trout will get five percent.

Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes are $22. Seniors only pay $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The once-monthly 24-hour passes remain just $60 with the next 24-hour fishing set for Dec. 12-13. These passes have a 15-fish limit.
