Huge Mt. Lassen rainbow trout on tap at Santa Ana River Lakes for this weekend

Tons of huge Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbow trout are on tap for anglers fishing at Santa Ana River Lakes during Thanksgiving weekend. This is the first plant of 20-plus pound rainbows made during the fall trout fishing season, and the big rainbows are the biggest that have been planted anywhere in Southern California this year.

The big rainbows will join the increasingly popular Nebraska Tailwalker rainbows in Santa Ana

"We're keeping our promise to anglers to provide the biggest and best trout available anywhere, and this one-two punch of Nebraska Tailwalkers and Mt. Lassen super trophy trout make a winning combination," said Doug Elliott, who co-owns SARL with Bill Andrews.

The trout action is already excellent after several weeks of plants, and a lot of limits of rainbows -- a mix of Nebraska and Northern California trout -- were reported over the past week. The best action has been on small trout jigs, trout plastics, floating baits (mostly in chartreuse and rainbow), inflated nightcrawlers, and Kastmaster of similar-type spoons. Adding a scent to any and all of the baits seems to help speed up the action.

Kevin Slape, Upland, had a five-fish limit topped by a 5.4-pounder. He was kayak trolling with Mira-Shad lures. Tony Parise, Long Beach, and Ray Burk, Orange, had 10 rainbows totaling 27 pounds, including a four-pounder, fishing chartreuse Nitro Bait.

Santa Ana River Lakes is planted with trout every Wednesday, and the holiday season means there will be plants of huge rainbows and some opportunities to win some Christmas cash. The first plant of huge, 20-plus pound Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows went in on Wednesday this week. The lakes were slated to be closed Thanksgiving day, but they are set to reopen on Friday giving anglers their first show this year at the huge 20 to 30-pound then coming in December, there will be two events to mark on the calendar: First, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, SARL will be stocked with the largest Nebraska Tailwalkers the Chaulk Mound Trout Farm has to offer. This will be followed with a special $20 buy-in trout derby on Saturday, Dec. 20. The entry fee is in addition to the usual lake entrance, but all derby entry money will be awarded to the anglers catching the five biggest trout caught that day. The biggest fish will win half the derby money, the second biggest will get 20 percent, the third biggest 15 percent, the fourth biggest will win 10 percent, and the fifth largest trout will get five percent.

Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes are $22. Seniors only pay $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The once-monthly 24-hour passes remain just $60 with the next 24-hour fishing set for Dec. 12-13. These passes have a 15-fish limit.
