There were 11 trout over the 10-pound mark caught this past week at Santa Ana River Lakes, and the top fish was an 18-pounder landed by Daniel Cortez, Orange, while fishing a nightcrawler near the boat dock.
Other big fish included a trio of 14 1/2-pounders. Hannah Ng, Rowland Heights, landed one of those big boys and added a 12-pound, 13-ounce fish to her stringer. Craig Adkison, Orange, caught a 14-8 as did Grant Yamashida, Diamond Bar. Usman Vahad, Anaheim, landed a 13-1, while Scout Trayer, South Bay, caught a 12-2. Brent Kaylor, Garden Grove, landed a 12-even.
One of the week's top stringers was reported by Fernando Espino, Placentia, who bought two fishing passes and weighed in 10 trout that totaled 23 pounds. His big fish was a 10-pounder.
The best action has been on inflated nightcrawlers doused with Nitro Gravy or floating baits in a variety of colors, with lemon limit, chartreuse, rainbow, bumble bee, orange, and white lightning all producing fish. Lure fisherman are using small jigs, trout plastics, and Z spoons. Chris' Pond has been a hot spot, but trout are showing all around the big lake, too.
Trophy Mt. Lassen Trout Farms' rainbows are being planted weekly through the end of the year. Trout topping 20 pounds are slated to go in each week and the biggest fish could easily top the lake and state record of 28.1 pounds caught in 2005 at SARL.??
??Anglers fishing at SARL should keep in mind the Eagle Claw bounty on a new state record fish. If the 28.1-pound state and lake record is broken using Eagle Claw Nitro baits or bait additives, the lucky angler can claim a $500 prize. If an Eagle Claw hook is used, he or she is eligible for another $500.??
Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The lake's 24-hour passes are available only once a month for trout season -- the weekend closest to the full moon. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $60. The lake will be planted every Wednesday for the remainder of trout season.
