At least two dozen rainbow trout over 10 pounds were caught this past week at Corona Lake in the best trophy trout bite of the season so far.

"We just had an incredible week with big fish," said David Horn at the lake. "The big 20-plus pounders are still here. I haven't seen any of those brought in yet."

Horn said the biggest rainbow reported in the big fish bite was a 17-pound rainbow landed by Ralph Ortiz, Fontana, fishing chartreuse Nitro Bait from a boat. Rainbows at 16 pounders were caught by Jonah Velardes, Elsinore, also on chartreuse Nitro Bait at the dam, and by Dale Casados, Riverside, on a jig from shore. Tyler Richardson, Elsinore, caught a 14 1/2-pound rainbow, also on chartreuse Nitro Bait.

There were seven trout at 13 1/2 pounds reported. Anglers landing trophies at that size include Jesus Jimenez, Azusa, Tom Ritchey, Westlake Village, Chris Turgeon, Riverside, Speedy and Jimmy Callihan, Andrew Rodriguez, Elsinore, Juan Esparca, Baldwin Park, and Bruce Farey, Riverside.

The best action has been for boat anglers fishing near the dam, but a lot of quality fish are also being landed by shore anglers. The lake's water level has come up, and the best action has been on Nitro Baits in rainbow or chartreuse or inflated nightcrawlers doused with Nitro Grease or Gravy.

Trophy Mt. Lassen Trout Farms' rainbows are being planted each week through the end of the year with 20-plus pounders possible each week, and lots of ???teen class fish are going in.

Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The popular 24-hour fishing passes are offered on Friday and Saturday nights on the weekend nearest the full moon for the rest of trout season. The next all-night dates are Dec. 28, 29, and 30 (with an extra day for the Monday holiday). These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $60. The family special, where mom and up to three kids 12 or under can help dad catch his limit, will apply on these all-night passes.
