Corona Lake's trout action has been excellent this past week with 16 rainbow trout over 10 pounds reported. The top fish was a 17 1/2-pound rainbow, but no one landed any of the 20-plus pounders planted last week.
Those super trophy fish over 20 pounds are slated to be planted in Corona Lake from every week now through the new year. There is even a chance that one of these Mt. Lassen Trout Farms' fish will top the state record of 28.1 pounds caught two years ago at sister water Santa Ana River Lakes.
Other big fish landed this past week include a pair of 14 pounders, one landed by Tim Bryant, Corona, and the other by Chris Lambeth, Chino Hills. A 13 3/4-pound rainbow was caught by Russ Thompson, Chino Hills, while 13 1/4-pound trout were caught by Ryan Hobson, Upland, and Annette Elias, Brea. Trout at 13 pounds even were caught by Ryan Maurivi, Grand Terrace, and Jorge Nunez, Southgate. There were also a lot of five-fish limits reported with the average trout from 1 1/2 to two pounds.
The best action has continued to be in the deeper water at the dam and off the far side of the lake, with boat anglers able to reach and fish the deep water more effectively than shore fishermen. Nitro Baits in chartreuse or with nightcrawlers doused with garlic Nitro Gravy have been the best baits. A few fish are also showing on trolled Kastmasters or small trout jigs.
Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The popular 24-hour fishing passes are offered on Friday and Saturday nights on the weekend nearest the full moon for the rest of trout season. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $60.
