There were 13 rainbow trout over the 10-pound mark reported at Corona Lake this past week as trophy trout season swings into full gear. The biggest trout weighed in was a whopping 18 pounds.
??George Salazar, Norwalk, was the angler who weighed in the 18-pound rainbow. Issael Franco, Colton, caught a 16 1/2-pound trout, while Tony Ferguson, Riverside, landed a 13 3/4-pounder. Walter Hefftner, San Pedro, had rainbows at 13 and 12 pounds, and John Pizzifred, Fontana, caught a 12-12 rainbows. A 12 1/2-pounder was caught by Mike Shintani, Riverside, and 12 pounders were landed by Carlos Garcia, Murrieta, David Kelley, Helendale, and Jeff Flag, Fontana, topped off his 20-pound, five-fish limit with his 12-pounder. Rain last week helped raise the water level at Corona Lake, and more rain this week should keep the water flowing.
Nitro Bait and Power Bait in chartreuse or with nightcrawlers doused with garlic Nitro Gravy have been the best baits. A few fish are also showing on trolled Kastmasters or small trout jigs. The best action has been near the dam.
Trophy Mt. Lassen Trout Farms' rainbows are being planted each week through the end of the year with 20-plus pounders possible each week, and lots of ???teen class fish are going in.
Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The popular 24-hour fishing passes are offered on Friday and Saturday nights on the weekend nearest the full moon for the rest of trout season. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $60.
