The good catfish action continues this week at Santa Ana River Lakes with some bass showing as well, but the big news is that trout plants begin this week and the lakes will begin receiving weekly trout stocks. Catfish will still be going in along with the trout for this week and next week. A huge plant of trophy Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows will be planted starting on the 18th of October for the official trout opener.
Catfish anglers fishing from boats are still having the best success. The big lake and Catfish Lake have been the best spots. The best baits continue to be mackerel, the M&M (marshmallow and mealworm) combo, shrimp, and nightcrawlers, all dipped in Gravy.
David Warren, Orange, caught three catfish totaling 9-12 with fish to 6-4 on mackerel. Robert Zeller, Ontario, caught five catfish totaling 14.34 pounds with fish to 5.75 pounds on dough bait. Jim Barnett and David Bell, both of Redondo, teamed up to catch six catfish totaling 14-0 with fish to 4-0 on mackerel. Brette and Grant Ishibashi, both of Montebello, caught 10 catfish totaling 18-0 with fish to 3-0 on the M&M combo. Tyler Mattoney, Garden Grove, cause six catfish totaling 13-0 with fish to 4-0 on shrimp.
Lots of small largemouth bass are showing, mostly in the Catfish Lake, on nightcrawlers and small Rapalas.??
Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The lake's 24-hour passes are available once per month -- on the Friday and Saturday nights closest to the full moon. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $45.
