A bonus plant of Lightning Trout went into Corona Lake on Friday. The golden-hued trout joined a huge supply of rainbows to keep the trout action very good over the past weekend. Many anglers are getting limits of trout with kicker fish from three to five pounds.
The best bite continues to be on a wide variety of floating dough baits in bright colors, especially those impregnated or doused with garlic scent. The Berkley Mice Tails, Lip Ripper Ratz, small artificial trout worms, and small jigs also continue to catch a lot of fish. The trout are starting to concentrate in deeper water as the weather warms, and boat anglers have the best success at the dam and in the deeper water in the main part of the lake and off the far shoreline. But shore anglers making long casts at the dam and points can also get out to the rainbows.
Kevin and Don Stephenson, Fallbrook, had seven rainbows for a total weighed of 22.4 pounds with a five pounder the top trout. The pair were fishing green dough bait from the shore. Clint Love, Culver City, had three rainbows for a total weight of 15 1/4 pounds, including his best fish at 5 3/4 pounds. He was fishing inflated nightcrawlers near the flooded trees at the back of the lake. Robert Gallegos, Riverside, landed a pretty typical five-fish stringer that weighed 13 pounds and was topped off with a 3 1/2-pounder. He was fishing Lip RipperZ jigs with garlic Love Sauce.
Anglers at Corona should also note that the bass, catfish, bluegill and crappie are also showing in pretty fair numbers, with all those species well into their annual spawn and haunting shoreline structure. While most fishermen are targeting trout, the few anglers fishing cut baits for cats or plastics for bass are having a good bite.
There is an ongoing big fish contest running between the Lakes now through Sunday, May 13th, and the angler who catches the largest trout on a Lip RipperZ product will win a free $500 Turner's Outdoorsman shopping spree. And all anglers who land any trout on a Lip RipperZ product and have their picture taken by one of the lake guides or at The Lakes' web cam will be eligible for a May 13th drawing for a second $500 shopping spree.
