Tagged trout worth up to a $144 value will be on tap for anglers fishing Corona Lake this week, and the third event in the Lip RipperZ Tournament series will be here Saturday, Feb. 25, with the top prize worth up to $1,200 in cash.
There are Lip RipperZ events each month with a total of 10 this season, and this Saturday's competition is the first of three of those events to be held at Corona Lake. Entry fee is $15 (in addition to the regular gate fee), and there is a 100 percent payout to the top four fish caught on Lip RipperZ products.
The tagged trout event is ongoing through March 4, and weekly plants of rainbows will be keeping the action hot. This week's plant will feature Nebraska Tailwalkers, while next week the Sierra Bows return. Tags range from the $144-value gray tags that are good for a free pontoon boat rental and two gate passes to the green tag that is worth a Lip RipperZ tee-shirt. Cash tags are worth $50 (red) or $100 (white), and there are several other color tags worth other prizes.
The rainbow trout bite has been excellent again this past week with many anglers posting hefty stringers of rainbows averaging from 1 1/2 to two pounds each. Sam Diffatta, Fontana, landed rainbows at seven and 7 1/2 pounds on a mouse-bait combo from shore. Nelson Triuillo, Huntington Park, had a 5 1/4-pound rainbow at the dam. Eddie Cole, San Bernardino, landed five rainbows for 22 pounds total, including a 4 3/4-pound rainbow. Thomas Walsh, Jurupa Valley, landed 10 rainbows for 23 pounds, including a 4 1/2-pounder, while float tubing.
Floating dough baits in a wide variety of colors continue to provide the best action when fished on light leaders, and the "mouse" combos with a floating bait head and a trout plastic or nightcrawler tail have also been very good. Small jigs and trout plastics have also been good. Adding a garlic scent to the baits or lures had been a good idea.
