The Corona Lake scales have had a work out this week with stringer after stringer of nice rainbow trout. The action has been very good throughout the week and the huge weekly plants of Nebraska Tailwalkers or Sierra Bows have kept the bite hot.
The big fish reported was a 6 ?-pound rainbow caught as part of a 15-fish, 24 ?-pound catch made by Andrew, Steven, and Angie Dominguez, all of Ontario, fishing green garlic floating boat at the dam shoreline. A five-pound trout was the big fish on a 10-fish, 28-pound stringer weighed in by Eric Ulman and John Corzel, both Marina del Rey, fishing green trout worms from a boat. Doug and Jacque Spell, Corona, landed 10 trout for 23 pounds, while Rudy Pinado and Renee Chestwood, both Corona, also had 10 rainbows for 23 pounds. Geovanni, Louis, Jose, and Mitz Marquez, all Riverside, land 16 rainbows for 35 pounds. Robert de la Torre, La Puente, and Leonard Miller, Whittier, had 10 trout for 22 pounds. Wes Epding, Long Beach, weighed in a five-fish stringer that went 13 ? pounds. Young Luke Villarreal, el Monte, had his first-ever trout - a 2 ?-pounder at the dam.
Floating dough baits in a wide variety of colors continue to provide the best action when fished on light leaders, and the "mouse" combos with a floating bait head and a trout plastic or nightcrawler tail have also been very good. Small jigs and trout plastics have also been good. Adding a garlic scent to the baits or lures had been a good idea.
The annual tagged trout event kicks off this week when Sierra Bows are planted this Thursday, Feb. 16. The tagged trout are worth cash payoffs or a whole host of prizes, from free gate passes and boat rentals to free tackle. This event continues until Sunday, March 4. Nebraska Tailwalkers will be planted next week and the Sierra Bows again the following week. Also coming up this month with be the third Lip RipperZ Tournament at Corona Lake on Saturday, February 25th. This 2012 tournament series is being held all over the region.
