The tagged trout event featuring cash and prizes for each rainbow wearing a tag is ongoing at Santa Ana River Lakes Limits through March 4, and the rainbow trout bite has been very good with a lot of anglers posting limits of fish.

The tags range in value from the gray string tag that is worth a pontoon boat rental and two free passes, a $144 value, down to the green tag that is worth a Lip RipperZ tee-shirt. Cash tags are worth $50 or $100 (red and white, respectively), and there are several other color tags worth other prizes.

Top fish reported this past week was an eight-pound rainbow that topped off a three-fish stringer weighed in by Chris Jr. and Chris Caceres Sr., both San Dimas, while fishing fire tiger-colored lures from a boat. Rainbows at seven pounds were posted by Alex Alch, La Habra, and Christine Orgtega, Long Beach.

Most of the trout are averaging right around two pounds, which is evidenced by the size of most of the stringers. Eddie Espinosa, Anaheim, had 10 rainbows for 21 pounds fishing small jigs in Chris' Pond. Frank Guzman, Santa Fe Springs, landed 10 rainbows for 19 pounds on jigs in the Bubble Hole. Roland Temores and Abe Perez, both Baldwin Park, had five rainbows for 10 pounds, while Jesus la Pena, Rowland Heights, had five rainbows for a total of 10 1/2 pounds.

The bite has been good on a wide variety of floating dough baits, small trout jigs, and trout plastics. The mouse-style bait-plastic combos have been very good, and the nightcrawler-Power Bait combo has also been producing a lot of trout.

SARL's weekly plants will feature Nebraska Tailwalkers this week followed by more Sierra Bows next week for the final weekend of the tagged trout event.
