Upper Lake Water Temperature: Mid 50's
Lower Lagoon Water Temperature: Low 50's
Next Stocking of Upper Castaic Lake: The week of January 30th
The lake was stocked this week at the Main Ramp on Wednesday the 18th with 1,000 lbs. The trout can be caught on PowerBait and small Kastmasters and Rooster tails at the main ramp and off the dam. Those who are fishing with lures tend to get their limits a little faster than those with PowerBait.
The striper fishing had been really slow the past week for those fishermen with cut bait. Although the catfish have been better all week on cut bait most were caught close to the bottom. even though the striper have been slow on bait they are picking up on swimbaits, most have been caught along the dam and the banks of the west ramp. Lunker Punkers and Bombers are best for the early morning and late evening bite while the Huddleston's and Castaic Swimbaits are great baits to be working during the day off the bottom. These swimbaits can also be used to catch largemouth out on the lake from a boat or on the shoreline. Not too many bass reported being seen on the surface, most are being metered around 25 to 40 feet still so the Huddleston's and Castaic swimbaits are perfect for that.
The lower lagoon has been a hot spot for good sized largemouth. Early morning and evening the bass are hitting Spooks and other top water baits. During the day though they have been hitting big plastics, little bluegill imitation baits and football head jigs around the fishing pier and Campsite A. The catfish have also been biting chicken liver and bloodworms areound the RV Campsites and Campsite B.

1-16-2012Striper fishing has been pretty rough for bait fishing around the buoy line but anglers have been catching catfish on sardines and 'chovies. While the cut bait hasn't been producing big numbers for the stripers, the swimbait bite is doing a lot better around the dam and west ramp. Lunker Punkers and bombers are great baits for the early morning and late evening bite while the Huddleston's and Castaic swimbaits appear to be working during the day off...... Read More
