The trout action at Corona Lake has been pretty much wide open over the past week with anglers getting full stringers of rainbows averaging 1 1/2 to two pounds.

The big fish was a 6 1/2-pounder caught by Josh Avila, Riverside, that topped off a three-fish 13 1/2-pound stringer taken on floating bait from a boat, but most stringers have at last one trout from four to five pounds. Chris Gierlich and Brad Donahue, both Chino, had 10 rainbows that weighed 26 pounds and the biggest fish was a four-pounder. The pair were fishing Pee Wee Worms from a boat. Glen Anderegg, Ontario, and Curt Miller, Corona, had nine trout for 21 pounds, including a 3 1/2-pounder. Gary Sr., Gary Jr., and Rod Duff, from Norco and Riverside, landed 13 trout for 21 pounds, while Val, Ron, and Ken Orloff, San Diego, landed 15 trout for 28 pounds.

The bite has been equally good on baits and lures. Many anglers are fishing floating dough baits or nightcrawlers doused with scent and just as many are fishing the small trout jigs or trout worms. Both camps are getting hefty stringers of rainbows.

The handful of anglers targeting catfish are also still finding very good action. David Presley, Riverside, landed 20 catfish that weighed 40 pounds total. He was fishing mackerel from a boat. There was also a 14 1/2-pound sturgeon landed by Tom Ramirez, Pomona, fishing at the dam.

There will continue to be huge weekly plants of trout right through the end of the year. Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors pay only $20. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The 24-hour passes are available on the Friday and Saturday nights nearest the full moon. The next 24-hour fishing weekend will be Dec. 9-10. These passes cost $60 and anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit. Camping at Corona Lake is also free with a 24-hour pass. For Corona Lake fishing information, call 951-277-4489 or log on at www.fishinglakes.com.
