The trout action remains wide open and quite of few of the bigger trout planted over the past two weeks started showing at Corona Lake over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
The biggest rainbow was a whopping 16 1/2-pounder landed by Santiago Godoy of Riverside fishing green floating dough bait from shore. Joe Estrada, Moreno Valley, landed a 10 1/4-pound rainbow on a Rapala fishing from a boat at mid-lake, while Matt Thomas, Riverside, landed an 8 1/2-pounder on a Pee Wee Worm from a boat.
The biggest five-fish stringer reported weighed in at 21 1/2 pounds. It was posted by Scott Duff, Downey, fishing from a float tube in the far back corner of the lake with salmon eggs, and his best fish was a 6 1/2-pounder. Bruce Robinson, Romoland, have a seven-pounder as his top trout, but his five-fish stringer total weighed in at 20 pounds. He was also fishing from a float tube with small trout worms. Pat Valencia, Lake Elsinore, had 10 rainbows for 35 pounds, including a six-pounder, while Mark and Jake Christoph, Los Angeles and Palm Springs respectively, landed 10 trout for 34 1/2 pounds, including a 6 1/2 pounder. Gary and Greg Duff, Moreno Valley, boated 10 rainbows for 30 1/2 pounds. Fabian and Manuel Gomez, both Ontario, had seven trout for 24 pounds, including a five pounder, while Richard Moreno, Phillips Ranch, landed 11 trout for 23 pounds. Shon Roberts, San Diego, had five rainbows for 16 pounds. The best action continues to be on bright-colored floating baits in lighter colors, especially chartreuse, spring green, yellow, peach, and white. Anglers fishing small jigs or trout plastics in the same colors are also scoring on the trout, and adding garlic scent to the floating baits or the lures is a good idea.
Other than the trout, a few catfish and sturgeon are showing each week. Juan Ortega, Riverside, landed and released a 75-pound class sturgeon from shore, while Ramon Gonzalez, Escondido, caught a 10 1/2-pound catfish on shrimp from shore.
There will continue to be huge weekly plants of trout right through the end of the year.
