We kicked off our second SFR Charter of 2009 aboard the Aloha Spirit out of Captain Hook's Sportfishing in Oxnard. It's been really good fishing so far weather permitting. I took advantage of the outstanding conditions and fished with Captain Shawn Steward on Saturday and Sunday. For both days we went the distance and made the run to Santa Rosa Island for super quick limits of really nice grade Reds and Chucks with a few Lings in the mix. The Bankies and Widows were out there in full force so depending on your taste, you could crank up twenty to forty cranks for those delicious Bankies and Widows, or you could fish the bottom for huge Reds, Chucks, and Lings. The fish were biting full force! It only took about an hour to make quick limits and we headed to Santa Cruz to fish the kelps for exotics.
Captain Steward blazed a trail through the kelps and we could visually see schools of White Seabass, Baracuda, and Calicos. The water visibility was amazing as you can clearly see the ocean floor from forty feet of water. The six pack sportboat Martuni was fishing the area and hit limits of Seabass so that got everyone's adrenaline flowing. We had a few nice biters that came unplugged in the kelps, we knew they were the right kind! SFR crewmember Don Paddick noticed some birds working outside the area where we were fishing so he grabbed his jig stick, threw the iron and cranked in a few barracuda. Soon the other anglers tied on some iron and the bite was on. We had another fantastic day aboard the Aloha Spirit, the surface action is beginning to turn on out there. Shawn is planning on running some special trips targeting exotics, don't miss out on the action! Call Captain Hook's Sportfishing and book your next trip at 805-382-6233 or check out the Aloha Spirit's website to checkout their schedule.
That's the word on the water, see you at the rail!
