Corona Lake cranks out 13 trout over 13 pounds

Last week's big plant of Mt. Lassen Trout Farms super trophies at Corona Lake keep the bite hot of the oversize rainbows, making this the third week in a row of excellent action on these trout.

This week there were 13 rainbows over the 13-pound mark weighed in at the tackle shop, with the biggest a 23-pound rainbow landed by Joe Loza, Corona, while fishing with rainbow-colored Power Bait from shore.

Mike Palacio, Diamond Bar, caught a 19.6-pounder on a nightcrawler, while an 18-pounder was landed Caesar Martinez, Moreno Valley, with green Nitro Bait.

There were three rainbows at 17 1/2 pounds caught this past week. The first was by Tim Hagerman, Norco, with the second by Jaime Ramirez, Devore, and the last by Raymond Sosa, Fontana. Seventeen-pound rainbows were caught by Gerrit Verhagen, Wildomar, and Bryan Bath, Yucaipa.

Both shore and boat anglers are scoring good catches, and limits have been pretty common on floating dough baits in rainbow, chartreuse, corn-yellow, and orange or inflated nightcrawlers doused with scent.

There are two more major events this month at Corona Lake. This coming Easter weekend, anglers will be able to buy 24-hour passes and fish all night Thurday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The 24-hour passes are $60 and have a 15-fish limit. The following weekend on April 18, Santa Ana River Lakes and Eagle Claw are hosting Angler Appreciation Day. This is a special two-for-one event. With each purchase of a full-price lake admission, your fishing partner gets in free, and the first 200 anglers in the gate will get a free Nitro Bait belt holder.

Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors only pay $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The once-monthly 24-hour passes remain just $60. These passes have a 15-fish limit. For Corona Lake fishing information, call 951-277-4489 or log on at www.fishinglakes.com
