This past week's plants of Nebraska Tailwalkers made the trout action at Santa Ana River Lakes sizzled, with many anglers reporting limits of trout up to five pounds and better on orange Nitro Bait (dough) and the Nitro trout worms, also in orange.
The big fish was a 7 3/4-pound rainbow landed by Justin Haney, La Mirada, while fishing the Bubble Hole. Mo Watanabe, Fountain Valley, caught a five-fish stringer that weighed in at 14 pounds total, including a 5 ??-pound rainbow, all caught on chartreuse floating bait at Levitz' Corner. Vanessa Thomas, Ontario, had four trout, all between three and 3 ?? pounds.
Santa Ana River Lakes will be looking to repeat the catch from two weeks ago when more then 20 rainbow trout topping the 10-pound mark were caught. The last load of super trophy Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows will be planted this week, and this plant is expected to have fish pushing 30 pounds.
As a bonus, Santa Ana River Lakes will have 24-hour fishing this Friday and Saturday nights. This 24-hour fishing was added to the schedule because of the pleasant weather forecast for the weekend. There will also be 24-hour fishing Easter weekend, April 10 and 11. Also coming in this month is Angler Appreciation Day. This is a special two-for-one event sponsored by Eagle Claw on Saturday, April 18. With each purchase of a full-price lake admission, your fishing partner gets in free, and the first 200 anglers in the gate will get a free Nitro Bait belt holder.
Santa Ana River Lakes is normally open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors only pay $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The once-monthly 24-hour passes remain just $60. These passes have a 15-fish limit. For Santa Ana River Lakes fishing information, call 714-632-7830 or log on at www.fishinglakes.com.
