Nebraska 'Tailwalker' trout action good at Corona Lake

The trout action has been hot at Corona Lake ever since the Nebraska Tailwaker rainbows were planted last week with limits reported right through the weekend.

The biggest of the new trout from Nebraska was a 4 1/2 pounder caught by Greg Sanchez, Chino, to top off his 13 1/2-pound, four-fish stringer on strawberry Power Bait. Joe Conklin of Stanton had six trout to four pounds, while Uishal Singh, Covina, also landed a four-pound Tailwalker.

Most stringers has trout to 3 1/2 or four pounds, and the hot baits were floating dough baits -- Nitro Bait or Power Bait -- and dousing the bait with Nitro Gravy never hunts the action.

While all the attention has switched to trout, the catfish bite has also remained good for the few anglers fishing the cats. Corey Salery, Los Angeles, landed five cats that weighed 10 1/2 pounds total on mackerel and chicken liver.

Trout are now being planted each week, and the plants will alternate between the Nebraska Tailwalkers and the famous Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows. Some of those Mt. Lassen plants will again have the giant rainbows over 20 pounds that has made Mt. Lassen and Santa Ana River Lakes famous.

Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The popular 24-hour fishing passes are now only offered once a month nearest the full moon on that Friday and Saturday night. There is also new pricing for the fishing passes with trout season. Price has jumped slightly from $20 to $22 for regular passes. Senior passes have gone from $18 to $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The once-monthly 24-hour passes remain just $60 with this Friday and Saturday night the 24-hour fishing weekend for October.
