This is the last week Lightning Trout plants at Santa Ana River Lakes, and the overall trout action remains very good with many anglers posting limits, with many of the stringers having at least one trout over four pounds -- and some a lot bigger.
The top rainbow this past week was a 12 1/2-pound rainbow landed by Ayza Uddin, Anaheim Hills, while fishing with a green jig in Chris' Pond. Steve Hernandez, West Covina, caught an 11 3/4-pound rainbow on a nightcrawler from the Bubble Hole. Rainbows at 10 1/2 pounds were posted by Gilbert Ahumada, Bellflower, and Tony Medina, Norwalk. Kevin Slape, Upland, had a 10-pounder. The best Lightning Trout reported was a 7 3/4-pounder caught by Daniel Maestas, Santa Ana.
The catfish are also starting to show. For the second week in a row, David Pancho and Chinto Garcia, Santa Ana, caught eight catfish to 4-0 fishing trout guts.
While this is the last week of Lightning Trout plants, feisty, high-jumping steelhead rainbows will be planted later in March.
Santa Ana River Lakes is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The lake's 24-hour passes will be available one weekend a month on the Friday and Saturday night nearest the full moon -- and that means this weekend, March 2 and 3. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $45.
