OveTournament drew over 500 anglers to Corona Lake this past Sunday, and a 16-pound rainbow trout caught by Dario Romero of Chino Hills won the top prize -- a free, six-day, five-night all expenses-paid fishing trip to Hotel Punta Colorada in Cabo San Lucas during the peak of the roosterfish season provided Quality Toyota of Corona and 976-TUNA.com.

Romero was fishing from a boat with a Trout Trap when he hooked the big trout on Sunday, but the fish wasn't the largest fish caught during a week of very good action at Corona, following big plants of both rainbow trout and the colorful Lightning Trout. This week is the last time the Lightning Trout will be planted this season, capping off a three week run at the lake.

The biggest trout of the past week was a 21 1/2-pound rainbow trout landed by Beau Beaudoin, Corona, on rainbow Power Bait. A 20 1/2-pounder was landed by Wayne Ballew, vacationing from Pennsylvania, while fishing orange Nitro Bait. His brother Donnie Ballew, Moreno Valley, caught an 18-pound trout on chartreuse Nitro Bait. Both anglers were fishing from a boat, and the pair had eight other trout that weighed a total of 23 pounds.?? Don Klessig, Harbor City, caught a 12 3/4-pounder, while David Webb, Norco, caught an 11-pounder.

Boat anglers are seeing the best action, and the top bait combination is still chartreuse Nitro Bait doused with corn-flavored Nitro Gravy.

Besides the trout action, there has been a decent number of catfish and crappie showing as the water temperatures climbed last week. Esae Soto, Chino, caught a 26 1/2-pound catfish on chicken liver, while Cash Walker, Riverside, landed a 2 1/2-pound crappie on a wax worm.

Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The lake's 24-hour passes are available one weekend a month, usually on the Friday and Saturday night nearest the full moon. That's this weekend, March 2 and 3. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $45.
