Trout fishing was good this past week at Corona Lake, with Lightning Trout leading the stringer parade after last week's big plant. Most of the golden Lightning Trout have been in the two to 2 1/2-pound range. Top fish however were a huge 19-pound rainbow and an 80-pound sturgeon.
The lake will receive a huge plant of the new Sierra Rainbow-strain trout from Mt. Lassen Trout Farms. These fish have been raised differently than the typical hatchery trout to address angler complaints of poor fin quality, coloration, and vigor. The result has been vividly-colored, wilder fish that will make you think you're fishing wild trout in Montana.
Jose Guerra of Los Angeles landed that top rainbow trout this week, fooling the 19-pounder while fishing from shore with a lure. Other nice trout catches included Abel Chacon, Corona, and Edward Contreras, Riverside, who caught 10-pound and nine-pound trout, respectively. Both Chacon and Contreras caught their big rainbows on Power Bait while fishing from shore.
More and more catfish are being reported each week with the majority being caught on mackerel and shrimp. Those baits are also getting the occasional sturgeon. The 80-pounder was caught by Santiago Palacios from La Puente.
Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The popular 24-hour fishing passes are offered on Friday and Saturday nights on the weekend nearest the full moon. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $60. The family special, where mom and up to three kids 12 or under can help dad catch his limit, will apply on these all-night passes.
