Very good fishing has been reported again this past week at Corona Lake. The trout are showing in good numbers with some quality fish mixed in.
Nestor Valladares, Fontana, caught a 17-8 rainbow, which was the top catch at the lake this past week. Carlos Garcia, Murrieta, caught an 11-8 trout on a Roostertail while fishing at the dam. Daniel Waters, Perris, caught a 10-pound trout on a nightcrawler. Macho Keoiuphan, Long Beach, landed a 9-pound trout on orange and green Nitro Bait at the dock. Ryan Bath, Yucaipa, caught an 8-pound trout on orange Nitro Bait.
Corona Lake and sister water Santa Ana River Lakes are in the final days of a Tagged Trout "Poker" Tournament that started three weeks ago and runs through this Saturday, April 19. During the event hundreds of tagged trout have been planted and each tag has a card value. There are be daily winners -- $55 worth of Eagle Claw fishing tackle -- for the angler who catches the best poker "hand" at each lake. Then on Sunday April 20, there will be a drawing for cash prizes up to $500 among all anglers who caught tagged trout at both waters. Each tag will be an entry in this drawing. In addition, the angler who caught the highest daily "hand" in the tournament will win an additional $1,000.
More and more catfish are being reported each week with the majority being caught on mackerel and shrimp, and there will be 24- hour night fishing this Friday and Saturday night.
Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these $20 passes has a five-fish limit. The popular 24-hour fishing passes are offered on Friday and Saturday nights on the weekend nearest the full moon -- that means this weekend -- for the rest of trout season. These passes have a 15-fish limit and cost $60. The family special, where mom and up to three kids 12 or under can help dad catch his limit, will apply on these all-night passes.
