Bass: Soft plastics were the top choice for bass fisherman this week. The drop shot or Carolina rig were at the forefront of reports this week. ??4" worms in green or purple worked great for the drop shot rig, and brushog's and lizards in variations of green pumpkin or watermelon seed were great for those using the Carolina rig. Pig and jigs also picked up some nice bass this week. The Swimbait bite has tapered, but big baits are still worth the effort bringing in some big bass this week. Z -Plugs, LA Sliders, Spro BBZ, and Huddlestons were the most reported lures with most of those catches occurring within the first 15 feet of water. Swimbait fisherman were focusing on the dams and near the marina, mainly in the morning, while worm and jig fisherman were working south shore points 30 ??? 45 feet down. Jesse Mena of Hemet got a 8 pound bass fishing from shore with a swimbait. Birthday boy Jim Mehan of Winchester got two bass at 5 and 6 pounds trolling a jointed shad Rapala along the point to the left of the marina. Nine year old Zane Pregler of Murrieta got two bass at 6.8 and 5.2 pounds jig fishing 30 feet down in Rawson cove.??
Trout: The trout bite showed no signs of slowing. Shore anglers continue to dominate while boat anglers have been lacking limits. Trout were biting near the marina specifically along the shoreline fishing area , but holdover trout have been few. Most trout were caught between 10-25 feet with Powerbait in green or rainbow. Inflated night crawlers fished off the bottom were heavily reported this week. Kastmasters and mini jigs were the lures that worked the best for trout. Jesse Mena of Hemet got a 7.36 pound trout fishing from shore with a Kastmaster. Jim Mehan of Winchester got a 5 pound trout fishing with nightcrawlers in the marina. ??????
??
Striper: The striper bite was considerably slower this week than in the past. Trout swim baits, Plugs or large topwater baits were the most reported lures for striper. Fishing points near the marina or on the inlet remain proven spots for boaters. Kevin deemer of Hemet got two striper at 11.45 and 17.04 pounds fishing from shore with a Huddleston swimbait. ????
Catfish: There were no catfish reported this week, but great spots for catfish are the third cove of shoreline fishing, and near the east dam or wave attenuator. The most effective baits included anchovies, mackerel, and raw shrimp. Most catfish have been found on the bottom in 25 - 50 feet. Melvin Hyde of Hemet got two catfish at 8.98 and 7.10 pounds fishing along the wave attenuator with shrimp.
Panfish: There were some panfish occurrences this week. Most anglers have the best luck fishing along the dams, specifically near the stairways. Anglers have found that fishing 20 -30 feet off the dams using live worm dropped to 25 feet has been a consistent method. Jim Mehan of Winchester managed a third species brining in a 1.5 pound bluegill. Jim was fishing in the third cove to the right of the marina with a nightcrawler. Boldfin got a Crappie just over 3 pounds fishing on the east dam with a nightcrawler.

Big trout were the story this week at Irvine Lake, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "Big trout from 8 to 14 pounds were the rule rather than the exception almost every day for the past week", observed Getty. "There were lots and lots of really nice 4 to 7-pounders to go along with the trophy-class fish. We had so many big fish over the weekend, that we stopped weighing the 4 and 5-pounders!" The trout have spread out...... Read More
