Stop by the Marina and tell us about your fish!
Bass: Drop shotting or Carolina rigging plastics was a mainstay for bass fisherman. 4" worms in green or purple worked great for the drop shot rig, and brushog's and lizards in green pumpkin or watermelon seed were great for those using the Carolina rig. Swimbaits were bringing in some big bass this week, but the big bait bite has dwindled. Z -Plugs, California Swimbabes, Spro BBZ, and Huddlestons were the most reported lures with most of those catches occurring within the first 15 feet of water.???? Swimbait fisherman have been focusing on the dams and near the marina mainly in the morning while worm fishing has been the most productive on south shore points 30 ??? 45 feet down.??
Trout: .2008 started out great for trout at DVL. Boat anglers saw much improvement in the trout bite in the new year and shore anglers were still getting limits with ease. Trout were biting near the marina specifically along the shoreline fishing area , but holdover trout have been few. Most trout were caught between 10-25 feet with Powerbait in green or rainbow. Inflated night crawlers fished off the bottom were heavily reported this week. Kastmasters, Thomas Buoyants, and mini jigs were the lures that worked the best for trout. The New years day first to fish contest, with prizes going for biggest trout as well as tagged trout resulted in few skunks and full stringers. Steve smith of Hemet won a Daiwa rod and reel combo for his 1.24 pound tagged trout caught from shore with nightcrawlers. Ryan Lossette of Hemet won two free boat rentals for his 1.04 pound tagged trout hooked on shore with a Powerworm. Angel Ybanez of Hemet got a $30.00 gift certificate to Last Chance Bait and Tackle for his tagged trout. Alex and Andrew Patterson got $25.00 gift cards to Last Chance Bait and Tackle and the marina store for their tagged trout caught on red Powerworms from shore. Andy Tassone of San Jacinto walked away with a $225.00 annual parking and launching pass for his tagged trout. Glen Dilkason of Menifee won a $25.00 gift certificate to the marina store for his 1.40 pound tagged trout caught from shore on a Lip Ripperz jig. Jesse Mena of Hemet got a $20.00 gift card to Last Chance Bait and Tackle and a Fish Rap subscription pack for his two tagged trout caught in the third cove of shoreline on white crappie jigs. Chad Hoffman of Whittier won the big fish of the day at 6.29 pounds walking away with an annual parking and launching pass and plenty of bragging rights. He picked up this fat toad on the first point of shoreline with green Powerbait. Seven year old Travis Risco of Sun City won a rod and reel combo for the biggest fish, child category, his 4.89 pound trout was caught on the east dam with nightcrawlers. Gabriel Silva of Winchester got a 2.81 pound holdover trout fishing in the marina with nightcrawlers. Twelve year old Alexis Scott of Sun City got a 3.19 pound trout fishing the east dam with nightcrawlers dropped to 20 feet. Mathew Dalton got a 4.63 pound holdover fishing with a white crappie jig from the third cove of shoreline. Young Victoria Silva got a 1.4 pound trout fishing at the wave attenuator with nightcrawlers. 10 year old Nikki Risco got a 1.09 pound trout also fishing on the east dam with nightcrawlers. Pedro Silva of Winchester got a 4.67 pound holdover trout fishing in the marina with a nightcrawler dropped to 20 feet. David Casarez of Hemet got a 4.74 pound holdover fishing from shore with a nightcrawler. Timothy Koerner of Winchester got a 2.94 pound trout fishing the shore with nightcrawlers. Sue Anderson of Bloomington got a 3.85 pound trout fishing from shore with Powerbait. Vince Vanderbratte of Winchester got a 2.78 pound trout fishing from shore with Powerbait. Gary Anderson of Bloomington got a 3.37 pound trout fishing from shore with Powerbait. ??????
Striper: The striper bite was considerably slower this week than in the past. Trout swim baits, Plugs or large topwater baits were the most reported lures for striper. Fishing points near the marina or on the inlet remain proven spots for boaters. Steve Burns of Fullerton got a 14.70 pound striper fishing from shore with a Spro BBZ-1 swimbait
??
Catfish: There were no catfish reported this week, but great spots for catfish are the third cove of shoreline fishing, and near the east dam or wave attenuator. The most effective baits included anchovies, mackerel, and raw shrimp. Most catfish have been found on the bottom in 25 - 50 feet.
Panfish: There were no panfish reports this week, but most anglers have the best luck fishing along the dams, specifically near the stairways. Anglers have found that fishing 20 -30 feet off the dams using live worm dropped to 25 feet has been a consistent method. ??

1-3-2008Big trout were the story this week at Irvine Lake, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "Big trout from 8 to 14 pounds were the rule rather than the exception almost every day for the past week", observed Getty. "There were lots and lots of really nice 4 to 7-pounders to go along with the trophy-class fish. We had so many big fish over the weekend, that we stopped weighing the 4 and 5-pounders!" The trout have spread out...... Read More
