BASS
Bass fishing has been good. Anglers are catching bass around 30 ft of water. Majority of the fish reported were caught on senkos or dropshotting pink or purple plastic worms. Colored plastics, such as, Margarita mutilator and Morning dawn have been effective.
STRIPER
Stripers are still being caught. Yvonne Southerland, pictured above from Hemet caught a 22 lb striper. Recent catches have been in multiple areas. Try the I/O tower and around floating restroom #2.
A word from some guides on techniques for catching stripers:
1. Bait anglers are catching stripers with fresh sardines and anchovies. Our guides have suggested using "fresh" bait instead of frozen. One method working well is "fly-lining" pieces of fresh bait through the water column. This method lets the bait drift in the water through the striper schooling zones. The other method is placing a split shot sinker around 3-4' above your baitand letting it drop into the zone.
2. Troller's are doing much better with several different techniques. KFGS-Fishing has reported catching stripers using the new Optimum/Lucky Strike pearl white swimbait. Gregg Silks of Inland Guide Service has suggested using a Scrounger head with a Zoom swimbait. Another different type of trolling is using a Seps Pro Fishing Strike Master or Pro Dodger in front of a white trolling fly from Bluewater Tackle in Temecula. The trolling fly should be approximately 12-16" behind the flasher of choice.
One of the most successful trolling techniques is the most difficult one to master. The most deadly trolling technique is the "white fly line stripping" one. This requires a leadcore set-up to be used with a fluorocarbon leader. Use your favorite white trolling fly and actually make a stripping action, pulling directly on the leadcore line. This creates a pulsing action in the water with the fly. This is the No. 1 way to catch stripers on the troll. But, wear a glove or you'll have challenges with your hands getting cuts due to the leadcore line.
CATFISH
Catfish are still going strong this week. Robert Ramirez, Photo #1 from San Jacinto caught a 11 lb cat using a nightcrawler. Gabriel Gonzalez from Claremont caught a 4.03 catfish using mackerel by the trees. Typical bait for the cats are nightcrawlers, chicken liver and shrimp. We are stocking 550 lbs of channel catfish this week.
TROUT
Trout have been very slow. The best depth for the trout are under 80 ft of water. Try trolling your best lure by the west dam. Powerbait, mini jigs, and nightcrawlers work well for trout when they are being caught.
PANFISH
Redear, crappie and blue gills have been hitting this week. Anglers reported limits of bluegill using jigs and mealworms by the east dam.
