Corona Lake's trout action has remained red hot this past week thanks to heavy weekly plants of fish and a season-long stockpiling of rainbows. The warm weather has also been kicking the catfish action into gear.
The top rainbow reported was a 10 ?-pounder landed by Nick Jones, Riverside, while fishing rainbow floating bait from a float tube. Santiago Palacios, West Covina, topped off his 13-fish, 37 ?-pound combo stringer of trout and catfish with a seven-pound channel his top fish. He was fishing mackerel for the cats and chartreuse floating bait for the trout. Ernest Vasquez, Moreno Valley, landed five rainbows that weighed in at 16 pounds with his top fish a five-pounder, all on orange floating baits at the dam. Andrew Martinez and Ed Garcia, both Baldwin Park, had nine rainbows to 5 ? pounds for a 17-pound stringer on nightcrawlers. Daniel and Julio Salazar, Azusa, landed 15 rainbows for 41 pounds fishing yellow floating bait from a boat.
The bite has been good on a wide range of floating dough baits in bright colors, and the "mouse" combos with a floating bait head and a trout plastic or nightcrawler tail have also been very good. Small jigs and trout plastics have also been good bets, and adding a garlic scent to all the different baits or lures had been a good idea. All should also be fished on light leaders, especially for the wary holdover fish and bigger rainbows.
The only plant of Lightning Trout this season is slated for next Thursday, March 15. These gold and crimsom trout are some of the most popular fish planted each season at Corona Lake.
