The excellent trout action has continued at Corona Lake over the past holiday week, with lots of stringers of nice fish and a few quality trout reported after last week bonus plants of trophy fish.

The top rainbow was an 11-9 rainbow posted by Bill Kezar, Chino to top off the three-fish stringer that weighed in at 18 1/2 pounds, all on green dough bait at the dam. Stan Dutro, Rancho Cucamonga, caught nine trout for 27 1/2 pounds, and his stringer was anchored by a 10-pounder caught on a nightcrawler.

A sample of the good stringers includes a five-fish, 19-pound catch made by Jimmy Nunce, Chino, at the dam on hatchery pellet floating bait. Alex Lail and Ken Hopkins, both Murrieta, had 10 trout for 23 pounds fishing nightcrawlers from a boat, while Raul Valencia, Rialto, landed five rainbows for a 13 3/4-pound stringer fishing jigs from a float tube. There was also a 12-trout, 35-pound catch reported by Argin Mirzakhanian, Mike Simonian, and Hrach Sarkisyan on orange floating baits from a boat.

The best action has continued to be on floating dough baits in bright colors with the garlic and hatchery pellet flavors top bets. Small jigs and trout plastics have also been good.

Bonus stocks of trophy rainbows over 10 pounds went in last week and will be planted again this week for New Year's weekends.

Corona Lake is open both New Year's Eve Day and New Year's Day. The lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors pay only $20. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The 24-hour passes are available on the Friday and Saturday nights nearest the full moon. The next 24-hour fishing weekend will be Jan. 6-7. These passes cost $60 and anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit. A pair of brute rainbows at 17 1/2 and 18 1/2 pounds topped the excellent trout action at Santa Ana River Lakes this past week, and it seemed like most stringers had at least one rainbow in the four to five-pound class after massive plants just before Christmas. Those heavy stocks will continue this week for New Year's weekend. The big 18-8 rainbow was landed by Eddie Rodriguez, Montebello, on Christmas eve day fishing a green dough bait, and the 17-8......
