While there have been five weeks of trout plants at Corona Lake and excellent fishing almost since the first day, the official "Super Opener" of trout season will be held Friday through Sunday this week after massive plants of five types of rainbow trout and the biggest batch of trophy fish ever planted.
The stocks include 20-plus pound Mt. Lassen Trout Farms Super Trout, the long-awaited 12 to 18-pound Big Bad Reds, Nebraska Tailwalkers from three to 12 pounds, Sierra Bows from two to four pounds, and a huge load of two-pound class Ruby Reds from Jess Ranch. The Big Bad Reds are full-finned, hard-fighting rainbows that will test anglers' skills.
The biggest fish in an excellent bite this past week was a nice 10-pound rainbow landed by George Redding, Riverside, on green floating bait doused in shrimp salsa while fishing from a boat. Pedro Gabera, Pomona, landed eight rainbows for a 20-pound stringer, with his top trout a five-pounder while fishing rainbow floating bait from shore. Brothers Billy and Bobby Houtz, both Lake Elsinore, landed 14 rainbows for a 30 1/2-pound stringer, including a four-pounder, while fishing peach dough bait in the trees from a boat. Leif and Mark Johnson, both Garden Grove, landed 10 trout for 20 pounds fishing green dough bait at the dam from a boat and their top fish was a 3 1/4-pounder.
The best action has been on bright-colored floating baits in lighter colors, especially chartreuse, spring green, yellow, peach, and white. Anglers fishing small jigs in the same colors are also doing pretty well, and adding garlic scent to the floating boats or the jigs improves the number of strikes.
Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors pay only $20. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The 24-hour passes are available on the Friday and Saturday nights nearest the full moon. The next 24-hour fishing weekend will be Dec. 9-10. These passes cost $60 and anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit. Camping at Corona Lake is also free with a 24-hour pass. For Corona Lake fishing information, call 951-277-4489 or log on at www.fishinglakes.com.
