The "Big Cats, Big Tuna" big catfish competition held over the past 45 days at Santa Ana River Lakes and Corona Lake came to a close on Sunday, Oct. 2, and the big fish was a 22-pounder landed early in the competition at Corona Lake by Michael Howard of Rowland Heights.
A number of big fish challenged Howard's catch, especially in the final two weeks of the event when bonus plants of trophy-class Silver King catfish from the Imperial Valley were planted in both lakes, but none surpassed his catch. "We know there are still a number of bigger fish in both Santa Ana and Corona Lakes, but that's fishing," said Craig Elliott with The Lakes.
Howard's fish wins him a 12-day long-range fishing trip aboard the Royal Polaris out of San Diego to fish for giant yellowfin tuna to 200 pounds and more. He was fishing off J.D.'s Point from shore with a hunk of mackerel to make the catch, and the winning 22-pounder is still in Corona Lake because Howard released the catfish after weighing it in for the competition. "Some of the best trophy cats are caught each year in the fall at both lakes,' said Elliott. "With all the extra plants we've added this year, this fall should be even better than most."
