The catfish bite has been excellent at Corona Lake during the new moon period this past week with a lot of quality stringers. More and more of the broodstock fish planted over the past few weeks have been showing, with many fish from five to six pounds anchoring stringers.
Vince Perez, Rancho Cucamonga, landed a seven-pound Silver King catfish to top off his four-fish catch, all made using shrimp from shore. Heavy stringer went to Alex, Bobby, Alex, Ashley, Robert, Alyssa, and Devon Cruz, all of Fontana. The seven anglers landed 19 catfish for 27 1/2 pounds fishing nightcrawlers and shrimp dipped in Eagle Claw Gravy on a 24-hour family fishing pass. Santiago Palacios, West Covina, landed 15-fish to four pounds with a total weighed of 24 1/2 pounds fishing shrimp off the south shore, while Matthew Marchand, Fontana, had seven cats for 24 1/2 pounds with his best fish a 5 1/2 ponder. Marchand was fishing from a boat with mackerel and Hog Wild during the day. Other good stringers included a 14-fish catch made by Carlos and Selena Carranza, Rialto, that weighed 23 pounds and included a 5 1/2 pounder. Another 5 1/2-pounder anchored the 11-fish, 19 1/4-pound stringer caught by Rodney, Rodney Jr. Cameron and Joseph Clark, all Riverside. Brad Hutchinson of Corona and D.J. and Dave Berry, Lakeland Village, caught six cats to five pounds for a 20-pound stringer fishing nightcrawlers in the rain Sunday. Tanner, Chuck and James Tucker, all Hemet, landed 10 cats to 5 1/4-pounds for a 22 1/2-pound stringer, all landed on the marshmallow-meal worm combo and shrimp.
Besides the excellent catfish action, there has been a good bite on the tilapia, along with a few sturgeon. In fact, the week's big fish was a 22 1/2-pound sturgeon caught on a nightcrawlers near the dam by Chris and Seth DelaPena of Fontana.
The catfish are being planted every Tuesday and Friday, with trophy broodstock cats a component of the Friday plant each week. Tilapia are also added each week.
