The catfish and tilapia action at Corona Lake has been good to excellent again this past week thanks to twice-weekly plants of catfish, including broodstock fish each week now, and weekly plants of the tilapia.

The plants of trophy fish are really starting to pay off. Top catfish reported was an eight-pounder landed by Howard Sanson, Corona, while fishing in inflated nightcrawlers near the day. Chris and Seth DelaPena, Fontana, anchored their eight-fish, 20-pound stringer of cats with a 7 1/2-pound catfish, all on nightcrawlers from shore. Erik and Cary Hughes, Orange County and Rancho Cucamonga, landed eight cats with their best a 5 1/2 pounder. They were fishing shrimp along the south shoreline in the middle part of the day to make their catch.

The best action has been in the mornings and evening or at night during the 24-hour fishing on Friday and Saturday nights, and there have been a lot of tilapia in the mix, along with a smattering of crappie, sturgeon, bluegill, and bass.

Richard, Joshua, Andre, and Sergio Limas, all Hemet, had a nice stringer of catfish, tilapia, and the big fish was an 18 3/4-pound sturgeon. All the fish were landed on nightcrawlers from the dam shoreline on a 24-hour pass. Victor Lopez, East Los Angeles, landed a mixed 15-fish stringer of catfish, tilapia, and crappie that weighed 15 1/2 pounds, with his top fish a 4 1/2-pound cat. He was fishing with nightcrawlers behind the bait shop.

Anglers are also reminded not to forget that Corona Lake is still offering its "spare change" deal. Bring in a dollar of silver coins minted before 1964 (dimes, quarters, halfs, and dollars) and you can a $22 pass for that dollar in change. Got three dollars in old change? That will get you a 24-hour pass.
