(April 2 - San Bernardino, CA) Trout season is coming to an end and the final trout derby in the five-part series is scheduled for Saturday, April 10th at Glen Helen Regional Park, 2555 Glen Helen Parkway, Devore. Anglers will have another chance to cast off for the largest catch in the fastest time and try their hands at winning one of fifty valuable prizes. The lakes have been stocked with prize-sized trout giving fisherman a chance to reel in a winning catch. The derby will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.

The derby season has been interesting this year with winter rains playing more of a role than in previous years. Soaking rains occurred during two of this season's derbies, but die-hard fisherman did not let weather get in their way and came out in respectable numbers to fight the elements and try reeling in prize-worthy fish.

Derby participants come from all over the Southland - some have been returning religiously for fourteen years. While many catch the fish with the intention of broiling, grilling or baking using their finest family recipes, others fish strictly for sport and return the fish to their natural habitat. Participants have ranged from four years old on up; and this year's winning catches have ranged from 2 to 9 lbs, on average.

Noticing that children were fishing with their families, San Bernardino County Regional Parks Active Outdoors Program started Junior Fishing Workshops in 2009 to get more young people involved in fishing as a healthy activity. The workshops have been very well attended in their two years of existence and more children participate in the trout derby events.

As the trout derby season winds down, Regional Parks will gear up for catfish season. Catfish will be stocked in Glen Helen, Cucamonga Guasti, Prado, Yucaipa and MojaveNarrows (Pelican) Lakes in May.
