Mojave Narrows to host Trout Derby this Saturday at Pelican Lake

(March 16, 2010 - Victorville) Rainy weather has played an active role in this year's trout derby season at San Bernardino County Regional Parks. Out of the three derbies that have taken place, only one caught the break of a warm, sunny day. It looks like the weather is going to be on the side of the fishermen this coming Saturday as Mojave Narrows Regional Park, 18000 Yates Road, Victorville, hosts the fourth trout derby of the season. But weather is still playing a role, even though it is behind the scenes.

Late last January, during torrential rains, the earthenware dam of Horseshoe Lake at Mojave Narrows broke causing the lake to drain into the MojaveRiver. Since then Regional Parks has been working with federal, state and local agencies to begin re-building Horseshoe Lake.

Ordinarily the trout derby would be held on both Pelican and Horseshoe Lakes; however, because of circumstances only Pelican Lake will be available to fish during the derby. Pelican Lake will be well stocked for the event giving anglers a good chance of catching prize-worthy sized trout; but with fishing taking place at only one lake, the derby will be limited to 200 fishermen.

The objective of the trout derby is for fisherman to catch the largest trout in the fastest time. The derby begins at 7:00 a.m. this Saturday; park gates open at 6:00 a.m. Fifty prizes will be awarded ranging from $30 to $500 in value.
