The lake level held near full pool, and water temperatures have been dropping into the mid to upper seventies. Castaic anglers have fallen into a pattern of early morning boil chasing followed by afternoon finesse fishing. The lake is full of live bait, and enticing fish to eat anything other than shad has been tricky. Anglers who “make bait” with a shad dip net have been reporting excellent fishing. Otherwise, small shad imitating finesse baits in 10 to 20 feet of water have been producing between 2 and 10 fish in an 8 hour day. On most days striped bass can be targeted with topwater baits, the bubble rig, or spoons until about 8am. After that trolling A-rigs and flies in 20 to 40 feet has been mildly effective. Some anglers reported fooling deeper striped bass with vertical jigging spoons. Catfish anglers hooked fish along the dam with dip bait and cut sardines.
