Corona Lake catfish and tilapia bites both sizzling

The catfish and tilapia action continues to be very good at Corona Lake with some good catches of both species posted over the past week. The catfish action is best on shrimp with garlic Gravy or J.D.'s Mackerel fished on the bottom from a boat around the trees on the southeast side of the lake or along the east side near the dam. Most of the fish are from 1 1/2 to three pounds.

Al Hinton, Los Angeles, caught 15 catfish on a 24-hour pass and his stringer weighed in at 26 1/2 pounds. He was fishing shrimp in the trees from a boat. Freddy Jarmillo, Los Angeles, had 13 fish on his 24-hour pass and his stringer weighed 23 pounds.

Biggest catfish reported this week were a pair of 7 1/2 pounders. One was landed by Steven Shores, Riverside, fishing mackerel at the dam, while Daniel Brite and Kellen Fasan, both San Diego, had seven catfish, including fish at 7 1/2 and seven pounds while fishing mackerel at the dam. The tilapia are showing in all the shoreline areas, especially around structure, with the best action on half a nightcrawler. The tilapia are from a half to two pounds or better.

The summer catfish plants are twice a week this season and the tilapia are going in each week.

Sturgeon are coming for the big Warm Water Grand Opening June 19-21, which is Father's Day weekend. This will be the 1st time at the Lakes that Sturgeon will be stocked for CATCH AND KEEP fishing. There will also be bonus plants of channel catfish, including trophy fish, along with tilapia. More details to come about the sturgeon along with fishing tips, handling and cleaning info along with some great recipes. Sturgeon is some of the best tasting fish you can eat and these sturgeon are specially raised for gourmet restaurants.
