Corona Lake's big trout action continues, no-limit trout fishing and half-price admission this Sunday

The bite on bigger rainbows continues to be good at Corona Lake and many anglers continue to post limits. Overall, there were five trout reported that were 12 pounds or better.

The big news is that on Sunday (May 17) this week, anglers will be allowed in the lake at half price and there will be no limit on the rainbow trout. This week's plant of rainbows is the last one of the season, and the water in Corona Lake will soon be too warm for the trout to survive. So on Sunday, the limit on trout is being lifted for the day so anglers can remove as many of the rainbows as possible. And some are likely to be trophies.

The big fish this past week were a pair of rainbows that weighed 17 pounds. One was landed by Caesar Martinez, Moreno Valley, and the other by Earl Savard, Moreno Valley. Edwardo Silva, Covina, caught a 16-pounder, and James Camacho, Riverside, and his family had a 13-pound rainbow topped an eight-fish stringer of trout and catfish that weighed 24 1/2 pounds total. Tito Baltaxar, Moreno Valley, landed a 12-pound rainbow.

The best action has been inflated nightcrawlers with Gravy or Nitro Bait in rainbow, green, or orange. The whole west shoreline has been good, but boat anglers are still getting a few more fish in the deep-water spots at mid-lake and near the dam..

Catfish action is also really starting to take off with the plants going in each week now, and a lot of fish to 2 1/2 pounds are being caught by anglers fishing prepared mackerel baits. Top cat this past week was a 16-pounder landed by Melissa Welford, Norco, on her own mackerel bait.

Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors only pay $20, with a special $17 pass sold on Wednesdays. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. The 24-hour passes are now sold every Friday and Saturday and remain just $60. Anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit. For Memorial Day weekend, there will also be 24-hour fishing Sunday night. For Corona Lake fishing information, call 951-277-4489 or log on at www.fishinglakes.com
