Bass: Bass fishing has been absolutely insane at DVL yielding up to forty 3-5 pound fish for most anglers, which seem to be biting on anything plastic. Most bass have been holding between 10-25 feet. Baby brushogs or lizards in watermelon candy, fat Ikas in a host of colors, straight tail plastics in bold blue gill or hologram shad, and Senkos have all done well. Spinners, jigs and cranks have also got their share of fish recently. The Carolina, Texas, and drop shot rigs have all been reported as the way to go, so experimentation is advised.
Shawn Cooley of Quail Valley got his top 5 bass at 24.78 pounds within 1 hour fishing with Cool Baits. Tim Green of Encinitas got an 8.70 pound bass fishing the east dam with a Berkley jerk shad. This weeks National Bass West tournament gave bass anglers opportunity to beat the heat and get some outstanding 3 fish weights. Larry Cross and Art Berry got the top pro spot with 18.91 pounds. Rick Graham and Todd Bigalke got an even better weight for the semi- pro's with 18.93.
Trout: The trout have moved west shutting down the shore bite. Boaters struggled this week for trout that have dropped to 50 feet. Boaters have had their best luck trolling nightcrawlers, Rapalas, Excel lures, or Needlefish within the first 30 feet of water. The west dam, saddle dam, and around restroom 3 have been the spots for rainbows.
Striper: There were no striper reports this week Trout swim baits, Plugs or large topwater baits were the most reported lures for striper.
Catfish: The catfish bite just keeps on getting better at DVL. Great spots for catfish are the third cove of shoreline fishing, and near the east dam or wave attenuator. The most effective baits included anchovies, mackerel, and shrimp. Most catfish have been found on the bottom in 10-20 feet down. The Biggest cat of the week was caught by Elliott Lewis Jr. of Beaumont weighing in a 20.12 pound channel that was hungry for mackerel.
Panfish: There were few panfish reports this week, but most anglers have the best luck fishing along the dams, specifically near the stairways. Anglers have found that fishing 20 -30 feet off the dams using live worm dropped to 25 feet has been a consistent method.
