Think the Bald Eagle knew what weekend it was cuz, boy did they put on a show – three of them flew over, Dad, Mom and a Juvenile. Then Dad (we’ll just say it was Dad) landed right down on the beach to survey his domain – quite spectacular and quite patriotic.

Some pretty hearty fishermen out there this past week and weekend. Snow Wednesday and Thursday, then rain Friday and Saturday, then a gorgeous Sunday and Monday. Lots of happy campers, too as Sabrina Camp, Willow and North Lake Campgrounds have opened.

Fishing started on the down side, just as the weather did (woke to 2” of snow on Thursday morning), but as the weather dried out, the fishing got better. Fishing the Inlets (don’t forget we have 3) with Salmon Eggs, NightCrawlers or Jigs. Trolling seems to be picking up if you’re using NightCrawlers and going deep. Tossing Lures or using PowerBait or NightCrawlers are getting it done from shore. Department of Fish and Wildlife blessed us with lots and lots of fish with a Memorial Friday stocking.

The Lake Sabrina Café will be open seven days a week:

Breakfast 7:00am – 11:00am
Lunch 11:00am – 4:00pm

and our store hours are: 7:00am to 7:00pm

Now with the warmer weather, the new crop of skeeters are out and with the return of the favorite little pest, when using the bug juice, try not to get it on your hands – you’ll transfer it to your bait and the fish just don’t like bug juice or sunscreen or lotion or cologne or perfume. Wash your hands in the stream or Lake to get it off, then use some fish attractant on your hands. If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –the snow and sun makes it pretty bright against the blue sky. DON’T FORGET THAT JACKET.

If you’re heading up into the back country – layer appropriately, take plenty water and let someone know the direction your heading. You will encounter snow on the trails at the 9500’ level – some drifts may be little – some quite substantial. Had a report on the Blue Lake Trail – some drifts where you can lose trail if you’re not paying attention. Not sure what the back country lakes are looking like this week (didn’t get a chance to visit with many people) – we know there was new snow on the peaks and that means it was on the cool side up there - so plan accordingly.

Warmer weather in the forecast for the middle of the week, then they’re bringing in a slight chance of Thunderboomers starting Saturday and going thru the weekend. Temps look to be in the 70s this week for highs and the low-40s for lows. You can check out the weather forecast according to Howard our local weather ‘guesser’ at www.MammothWeather.com. You can also check out www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA (which is the little community right below Lake Sabrina) in the search field and you’ll get the forecast for at the higher elevation. You may need to scroll down on the webpage to see the temps.
