Isabella Dam Safety Modification Project May Situation Report

Lake Isabella - Lake Isabella, CA (Kern County)

by Lake Isabella Staff
5-7-2013

Highlights (last 30 days)
?? The Corps is (and will continue) conducting testing of the various materials to be excavated during the course of the project, including soil/rock core drilling and excavations.
?? The Corps is (and will continue) working with media outlets, local governments, businesses, and the public to explain that the current low lake level and Kern River flow downstream of the dam are not being caused by pool restrictions imposed by the Corps due to the condition of the dam.
?? The Corps is continuing to work closely with the U.S. Forest Services to mitigate and reduce potential impacts to their Lake Isabella office and recreation facilities.
?? The Corps and its AE firm met with Kern County on April 16 regarding the relocation of Lake Isabella Boulevard in the vicinity of the left abutment of the Auxiliary Dam. The Corps is coordinating closely with Caltrans for the relocation of Hwy 178. Design work is underway for both roadways.
?? The Corps is proposing the construction of a closure gate on Hwy 155 to act as an extension of the raised dam, in lieu of Hwy 155's very difficult and costly relocation. The Corps is working closely with Caltrans on this option.
?? The district released an informational video about the planned project at Lake Isabella, detailing the reasons for the work and the construction plan. The video can be found by clicking http://www.spk.usace.army.mil/Portals/12/documents/civil_works/Isabella/Poster-6-F_dateMAR2013.jpg

Looking Ahead (next 3D days)
. Continued surveying and geotechnical investigations will be conducted at the project site.
. Corps' coordination with USFS and the public in planning efforts for the relocation of recreation facilities.
